1st Latin American Ethics on Artificial Intelligence (LAAI-Ethics)
The 1st Latin American Ethics on Artificial Intelligence (LAAI-Ethics) will be held in Niterói, Brazil from November 27th to 29th, 2024, at the Computing Institute – Universidade Federal Fluminense UFF), Campus Praia Vermelha.
The 1st Latin American Ethics Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as an instrument to discuss the pressing need for ethical considerations in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI. Brazil is a major player in Latin America and, as such, it is uniquely positioned to influence the discussions and development of ethical and responsible AI in the region. The conference brings together researchers from academia and practitioners, including decision-makers and industry professionals, from different areas of knowledge – computing, communicators, health and legal professionals, philosophers, etc. The event aims to promote dialogue and raise awareness among those involved about the need for development of practical and well-founded solutions for a more ethical, responsible and inclusive AI. The main motivation for the event stems from the recognition of historical trajectories shared between Latin American countries, which highlight the need to think of their own solutions to face this challenge. However, the event also recognizes the universality of ethical concerns in AI and that solutions developed for other countries can also contribute to the development of ethical AI at the regional level, thus promoting dialogue and discussion of problems and solutions by inviting participants from global groups to contribute to the dialogue. The event aims to help build local capacity for understanding and implementing ethical AI practices. Furthermore, by promoting inclusive discussions across cultures and perspectives, LAAI-Ethics strives to create a platform where solutions can be crafted and shared collaboratively.
We hope that the 1st LAAI-Ethics will be a step towards shaping a future where AI is developed and used with ethical considerations, benefiting not only Brazil and Latin American countries, but the global community.
The event will be held in a hybrid format, with the lectures and debate tables broadcast simultaneously on YouTube.
We invite submissions in the following areas of knowledge and their intersection with Ethical AI including, but are not restricted to:
Submissions should be made through the Microsoft Conference Management system.
Accepted papers will be indexed with DOI and published in the event proceedings, which will be made available online at the SBC OpenLib in the SBC content portal.
At least one author of each accepted paper must register for, attend, and present the work at the conference for the paper to appear in the conference proceedings.
Length and Formatting: Submitted papers must be up to 4 pages (including all figures, tables and references) in the SBC format. Submitted papers must be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish.
The organizers reserve the right not to include in the Proceedings those works that are not registered or presented during the event. Authors with more than one approved article can pay a single registration, plus an “extra publication fee” per additional article.
It is worth mentioning that depending on the number of submissions, to accommodate constraints related to how much time is available in the conference program, we might not be able to guarantee that every paper has an oral presentation slot, and some papers might need to be presented as posters.
