2nd Latin American Ethics on Artificial Intelligence (LAAI-Ethics)

The 2nd Latin American Ethics on Artificial Intelligence (LAAI-Ethics) will be held in Niterói, Brazil from September 17th to 19th, 2026, at the Computing Institute - Universidade Federal Fluminense UFF), Campus Praia Vermelha.

About the Event

The 2nd Latin American Ethics Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as an instrument to discuss the pressing need for ethical considerations in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI. Brazil is a major player in Latin America and, as such, it is uniquely positioned to influence the discussions and development of ethical and responsible AI in the region. The conference brings together researchers from academia and practitioners, including decision-makers and industry professionals, from different areas of knowledge - computing, communicators, health and legal professionals, philosophers, etc. The event aims to promote dialogue and raise awareness among those involved about the need for development of practical and well-founded solutions for a more ethical, responsible and inclusive AI. The main motivation for the event stems from the recognition of historical trajectories shared between Latin American countries, which highlight the need to think of their own solutions to face this challenge. However, the event also recognizes the universality of ethical concerns in AI and that solutions developed for other countries can also contribute to the development of ethical AI at the regional level, thus promoting dialogue and discussion of problems and solutions by inviting participants from global groups to contribute to the dialogue. The event aims to help build local capacity for understanding and implementing ethical AI practices. Furthermore, by promoting inclusive discussions across cultures and perspectives, LAAI-Ethics strives to create a platform where solutions can be crafted and shared collaboratively.

Topics of Interest

We invite submissions in the following areas of knowledge and their intersection with Ethical AI including, but are not restricted to:

  • AI systems evaluation methods and practices
  • Development and deployment of safe and ethical AI systems
  • Experiences, interactions and practices promoting ethics in AI
  • Historical, humanistic, scientific, social and cultural perspectives on ethical issues in AI.
  • Critical studies on AI-based technologies
  • Laws, regulations, policies and governance of AI systems
  • Philosophical approaches to AI systems: agency, epistemic and moral issues

For all topics, contributions are expected, especially focused on or based on cultures, norms, laws and/or sociopolitical systems of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions should be made through the Microsoft Conference Management system.

Accepted papers will be indexed with a DOI and published in the conference proceedings, which will be made available online at the SBC OpenLib, in the SBC content portal.

At least one author of each accepted article must register and present the work at the conference for the article to be published in the conference proceedings.

Paper Length: Submitted papers must be up to 5 pages in SBC format, with up to 4 pages for the main text (including all figures and tables) and up to 1 page for the Ethical Considerations section (mandatory). Additional pages containing cited references are allowed.

Submitted papers must be written in Portuguese, Spanish, or English.

Anonymity Policy: Submissions must be anonymized and cannot contain any identifiable information. Authors must omit their names and affiliations from the submission, as well as Acknowledgments or other potentially identifying information. Citations to the authors’ previous work must be made in the third person. Submissions that do not comply with this policy will be rejected without review.

Ethical Considerations Sections

All authors must include an Ethical Considerations statement, a Generative AI Use statement, and an Author Contributions statement. They may also include, if applicable, an Acknowledgments section.

These sections are not meant for the discussion of limitations of your methodology, which should be addressed in the main body of the paper.

Please note that some of these sections should not be included in the anonymous submission. This applies to Author Contributions and Acknowledgments.

Ethical Considerations Statement

Required, must be included at submission time

This statement is a description of the ethical concerns and potential adverse impacts that authors considered and mitigated while conducting the work. Authors should describe the ethical challenges they faced in their submission and how they addressed such challenges.

In particular, submissions that (1) describe experiments with human subjects users and/or deployed systems (e.g., websites or apps), or (2) rely on sensitive user data (e.g., social network information) must adhere to precepts of ethical research and community norms. These include compliance with applicable laws and applicable professional ethical codes; respect for privacy; secure storage of sensitive data; voluntary and informed consent when appropriate; avoiding deceptive practices when not essential; beneficence and non-maleficence (maximizing the benefits to an individual or society while minimizing harm to the individual); risk mitigation; and post-hoc disclosure of audits.

We also encourage authors to discuss any potential adverse or unintended impacts the work might have once published, and how they have mitigated those potential impacts.

Generative AI Usage Statement

Required, must be included at submission time

A statement from all authors regarding whether generative AI tools (including but not limited to LLMs) were used during manuscript preparation. If such tools were used, the statement should identify the tool (e.g., ChatGPT, version X) and briefly describe the tasks it supported (e.g., grammar and style editing, summarization, figure or table structuring).

Given the values of the conference, LAAI prohibits the use of LLMs to generate text for publications. Use of generative AI does not diminish author responsibility for the originality, accuracy, or integrity of the manuscript. Failure to disclose the use of generative AI tools is grounds for desk rejection.

Author Contributions

Should not be included in the anonymous submission

A statement that summarizes the different contributions of each of the authors to the paper. There are many approaches to contribution statements, and authors can choose an approach they prefer, e.g., CRediT.

Acknowledgements

Should not be included in the anonymous submission

A short statement that often recognizes sources of funding/funders or key resources that were provided and enabled this particular research and paper. These statements also acknowledge people who supported the research, but have not made contributions that meet the standard for authorship.

The Microsoft CMT service was used for managing the peer-reviewing process for this conference. This service was provided for free by Microsoft and they bore all expenses, including costs for Azure cloud services as well as for software development and support.

IMPORTANTS DATES

  • Paper submission: May 15, 2026
  • Final Decision Notification: June 22, 2026
  • Deadline for submitting final versions of works: June 29, 2026
  • Registration deadline: to be determined

Participation

The organizers reserve the right not to include in the Proceedings those works that are not registered or presented during the event. Authors with more than one approved article can pay a single registration, plus an “extra publication fee” per additional article

It is worth mentioning that depending on the number of submissions, to accommodate constraints related to how much time is available in the conference program, we might not be able to guarantee that every paper has an oral presentation slot, and some papers might need to be presented as posters.
